New Year

It has been steady.

So it’s 2014.  What does that mean?  As a society, we spend a lot of time looking back at what happened the previous year and ahead at what is going to happen the next, as though a particular date is somehow meaningful.  I guess, as a whole, it’s best to have some sort of cathartic evaluation of where things stand, but as is typical of everything, New Years is completely overblown.

It’s just the continued march of time is what it is.  There’s no difference between 31 December and 1 January in practical purposes.  There was no radical change beyond simply taking down an old calendar and putting up a new one.  One day is still very much like any other.  The sun rises.  The sun sets.  It is the same slow march of time.  So what does it truly mean?

This is what it means.  Another year and dreary existence.  Another continuation of life as it has been and will be.  There is nothing that changes.  Ever.  It is the same.  It’s always the same.  Just because somebody decided that this would be the day for marking the transit of the earth around the sun once doesn’t mean that it has any other significance beyond that.
